Power BI reporting that people read
Reporting is a process, not a file. The structure, the cadence and the quality checks matter more than the visual polish.
Updated September 20, 2026
Three report types, three shapes
- Monitoring: one screen, stable metrics, comparisons against target
- Diagnostic: filters and breakdowns, built for someone hunting a cause
- Narrative: a small number of visuals with written findings for a meeting
Quality checks before each send
- Refresh time is visible and recent
- Row counts match the source within a known tolerance
- Totals reconcile to one number someone else owns
- Every filter default is intentional, not left over from editing
Retire what nobody opens
Usage data exists for a reason. A report with no viewers for a quarter is maintenance cost with no return; archive it and note who to contact if it is missed.
